Opening Ceremony

MC: Prof Ryan Ko, Chair and Director of UQ Cyber

Prof Ryan Ko established UQ Cyber, UQ's first interdisciplinary cyber security education program and research centre. He is currently Chair and Director of UQ Cyber. He has previously held scientific leadership roles at Hewlett-Packard Labs and the University of Waikato, New Zealand. His research is central to many cloud security, data provenance and SIEM tools across open source (OpenStack, Kali Linux) and industry tools (ArcSight) today. He has published 100+ publications in top venues (e.g. WWW, IEEE TDSC, IEEE TSC). A Fellow of Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) and recipient of the (ISC)2 Information Security Leadership Award, he holds a PhD and B.Eng. (Comp. Eng.) (Hons) from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is the co-founder of the NZ Cyber Security Challenge and drafted the NZQA Level 6 Cyber Security qualification as part of the NZ Cyber Security Skills Taskforce (Dept. of Prime Minister and Cabinet).

Mr Rongyu Li, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice President (Global Engagement), UQ

As Vice President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement) for UQ, Mr Li is responsible for leading the University's overall global strategy, with a particular focus on broadening UQ’s global reach and impact by enhancing the university’s engagement with a diverse range of overseas partners and prospective students, pathways, articulation and global mobility programs as well as global rankings strategy, global partnerships, international development programs and entrepreneurship. Rongyu is an outstanding leader in the fields of international education and Higher Education administration.

Prof Michael Brünig, Head of School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, UQ

Professor Michael Brünig is Head of School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at The University of Queensland. Professor Michael Brünig is a data innovation expert with over 20 years’ experience in research and development across industry, government, and academia over three continents.Professor Brünig is a versatile Academic Leader who has previously led the UQ Business School. Before joining UQ, Professor Brünig worked with Australia’s most widely known science research and translation hub, CSIRO. As an executive manager with the organisation, he led an initiative to establish a National Research Flagship on Digital Productivity and later guided the business through a merger to create Data61, a national research powerhouse focusing on data innovation. Professor Brünig started his career in research and development in the automotive industry in Germany and the United States.

Prof Huy Kang Kim, Professor, School of Cybersecurity at Korea University

Prof. Dr. Huy Kang Kim is a widely recognized researcher at School of Cybersecurity at Korea University. He has made unique contributions to the fields of data-driven information security, especially, IoT and automobile security. Also, he contributes international standards development in ITU-T, for example, his recent research on “Methodologies for intrusion detection system on in-vehicle systems” (X.1375) was approved as an international standard in the Intelligent Transportation System, Cyber Security (ITU-T). Prof. Huy Kang Kim founded A3 Security Consulting, the first information security consulting company in South Korea in 1999. Also, he was a member and the last leader of KUS (KAIST UNIX Society), the legendary hacking group in South Korea.

Dr Alexandra Siddall, Deputy Head of Mission, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia Government

Dr Siddall is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She is Australia’s Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy to the Republic of Korea. Dr Siddall has previously served overseas at Australian missions in Tokyo and Moscow. She has been seconded to the Office of National Assessments. Dr Siddall holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Queensland. She speaks Japanese, Russian and French.

Ambassador Sung-joo Choi

Ambassador Choi is Head of International Cooperation, ‘Ban Ki-moon Foundation for a Better Future’ Former Ambassador to Poland, Former Ambassador for International Security, and Former organiser of the 2013 Seoul Conference on Cyberspace.

Head of the Korean Consulate in Brisbane, Hanjin Bae

Mr Hanjin Bae is Head of the Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Brisbane, Former Deputy Consul General for the Korean Consulate General in Guangzhou and Director, Presidential Committee on the Northern Economic Cooperation.

Session 1 National Security and Cyber Policies

MC: Dr Greta Nabbs-Keller, Senior Specialist in Defence Research, UQ

Dr Greta Nabbs-Keller is a Senior Specialist in Defence Research at The University of Queensland (UQ). She is also an Affiliate Senior Specialist at UQ's Centre for Policy Futures where her current research project centres on issues of contestation and coherence in Indonesia’s national security policy making. Greta has extensive professional experience working on Australia’s bilateral relationship with Indonesia and continues to utilise her Indonesia country expertise in consulting, research, and international development roles. She contributes regularly to media and think-tank analysis on regional strategic, political and foreign policy issues, and engages with policy communities through submissions, dialogues, conferences and executive educations programs. Greta’s broader research interests include Indonesian civil-military relations, Indonesia-China relations, politico-security developments in Southeast Asia, and Australia’s regional foreign policy. Greta is an Executive Council member of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) Queensland.

Prof Jong-in Lim, Korea University, former Special Advisor to the President for National Security

Prof. Lim, Jong-in is the representative expert in cyber security in Korea. He is a former Special Advisor to the President for National Security, and participating many advisory works for the Korean government. Currently, Prof. Lim is a professor of Graduate School of Information Security at Korea University, which he founded in 2000. He received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in the Department of Mathematics at Korea University, Seoul. In 1986, he joined Korea University as a professor. Prof. Lim is a Chairman of the Digital Forensic Advisory Committee of Supreme Prosecutor's Office, and Committee of Security Technology of Financial Security Agency. Also, he was a former President of the Korea Institute of Information Security and Cryptography, and a member of the Personal Information Protection Commission under direct jurisdiction of the President. Prof. Lim is the first winner of the Medal of Honour by the President for Cyber Security, in 2012. With the 4th industrial revolution and digital transformation of society, the importance of cybersecurity is increasing worldwide. Due to the advanced ICT environment, strategic situation with North Korea, and geopolitical issues in Northeast Asia, South Korea is continuously making efforts to respond to cyber security as an important task. In Australia as well, cybersecurity seems to be emerging as more important issue due to the recent political conflict with China. International cooperation in cybersecurity is an essential element. In this presentation, Prof Lim will present Korea's cybersecurity-related issues and technological and policy efforts to respond to the issues. Also, he would explore practical ways to cooperate in cybersecurity between Korea and Australia.

Dr. Eunsu Jung, Director, Cyber Security Industry Division, Ministry of Science and ICT

Director Eunsu Jung is in charge of the Cyber Security Industry Division of the Ministry of Science and ICT. He worked for 14 years at SK Telecom, Korea's largest mobile network operator, and SK Planet. In 2019, he moved to the Ministry of Science and ICT, and he is the head of the cyber security industry division, which is in charge of fostering the cyber security industry. He received his bachelor's degree in electronic engineering from Hanyang University, master's degree in information and communication engineering from Sejong University, and doctoral degree from Korea University's School of Cyber Security.

Dr. Ms So Jeong Kim, Cyber Security Policy Research Dept, National Security Research

Dr. So Jeong KIM has worked at the NSR since 2004 and is now leading the Cybersecurity Policy Research Dept. Her primary research focus includes cybersecurity strategy, policies, and the international security of cyberspace. Dr. So Jeong KIM got her degree at the Graduate School of Information Security of Korea University in 2005 with the theme of " A Study of the Personal Information Protection in public sector - with the implementation of Privacy Impact Assessment". She has been involved in drafting the National Cyber Security Strategy of ROK which was published in April 2019 and also participated at the 4th and 5th UN GGE process as an advisor. In addition, she has been participated at the 2013 Seoul Cyberspace Conference, MERIDIAN process and several bi- / tri- / multi-lateral cybersecurity policy consultations and dialogues. The NSR has been hosted the international Conference on cybersecurity policy and strategy, the GCPR(Global Conference on Peace Regime) since 2014, too. Her main research area is various policy issues regarding national cybersecurity policy such as international nor setting processes, CBMs, CIIP, law and regulations, cybersecurity evaluation methodology development and comparison, etc.

Ms Michelle Mosey, Chief Operating Officer and US Lead for AustCyber

Michelle is the Chief Operating Officer and US Lead for AustCyber – the Cyber Growth Network; focussed on growing Australian cybersecurity start-ups and assisting to launch Australian businesses globally. Michelle’s career has focussed on national security elements in intelligence and security, with a strong focus on emerging technologies, cyber security, information policy and multi-national relationships. During 2018-20, she was the Head of Strategic Partnerships and Engagement North America at WithYouWithMe and the Global Head of Academy for WithYouWithMe; working with US Military veterans to train in high-tech career. Michelle joined the Australian National University in 2017 as the Senior Advisor Cyber Security and worked in the establishment of the ANU Cyber Institute. Michelle has led development programs focussed on talent strategies for cyber professionals, working closely with Australian universities to support STEM talent development and intern opportunities. She has directed a range of intelligence and security engagements across the Defence portfolio, Australian Defence Industry and international partners in support of policy development, information agreements, strategic planning, training and awareness. During 2009–2012 Michelle served in Washington as the Australian intelligence liaison to the Under Secretary of Defence Intelligence, providing Australian perspectives to shape and contribute to AUS/US intelligence and security relations. Michelle has also served as Chief of Staff to the Australian Deputy Secretary of Intelligence and Security, assisting to align intelligence organisational outcomes to Australian strategic outcomes.

Session 2 Diversity in the Workplace

MC: Ms Laura Jiew, External Engagement, School of ITEE, UQ

Laura is an external engagement specialist at the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the University of Queensland. She is a seasoned marketing and communications, stakeholder engagement and events professional and her career has spanned across the areas of non-profits, education, STEM and cyber/information security. She has an undergraduate degree in Science and postgraduate qualifications in Marketing and Event Management. She works closely with Jacqui and Amy in the Australian Women in Security Network.

Dr. Yoojin Kwon, Senior Researcher, KEPCO

Dr. Kwon is the Senior Researcher at KEPCO Research Institute responsible for cyber security and ICT research on Distributed Energy Resource and Power Grid. KEPCO is the one and only utility company in Korea that owns generation, transmission, distribution, and customer side of electric power. Dr. Kwon is an international member of CIRED WG 2020-3, Cyber Security on Smart Grid, and the advisory member of US EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute)'s DER Cyber Security Task Force. She has work experience on R&D Collaboration and external affairs responsible for technical sales and commercialization of corporate research and development outcomes. During year 2017 to 2019, Dr. Kwon completed global joint research project with US EPRI, Integration of NSM objects into and ISOC Framework project, which would enhance cyber-attack response for KEPCO control systems. She moved to US and worked with EPRI staffs to research on Cyber Security for Critical Infrastructure Protection and developed two new joint projects on Security Management for SCADA and DAS. Dr. Kwon earned her Philosophy of Doctrine Engineering degree from School of Information Security at Korea University. Delivery driven with 13 years international experience in a range of technologies such as data analytics, web search engine, gene allocation of bio industry. She has various work experience at Samsung Electronics, Sun Microsystems Korea, IBM Korea Lab and US EPRI.

Ms Jacqui Loustau, Founder, AWSN

Jacqui is the founder of the Australian Women in Security Network (AWSN), a NPO association, that is an open network of people aiming to grow the number of women in the security community. AWSN supports, inspires, and acts as role models and connects women in the industry and those looking to enter the field with the tools, knowledge, network and platforms needed to build confidence and interest. Jacqui is a champion for women in security and is also an advocate for securing small businesses and individuals. Passionate about security and collaborating with others to drive innovation and behaviour change in industry. Working on several initiatives to try and influence more talent from all industries and diverse backgrounds to pursue a career in security. Jacqui holds a Bachelor of Information Systems and is CISM, CISSP certified. Delivery driven with 21 years international experience in a range of technologies and practical experience across all security domains within multiple industry sectors. She has work experience across public sector, banking and finance, health Services, energy, manufacturing and media. She has worked in various highprofile projects within the UK, Belgium, Netherlands, France and Australia.

Ms Amy Roberts, AWSN, Australian Signals Directorate

Amy is Government Lead & Champion for Women in Cyber, organisational coach, and is a champion of women in cyber/information security in Australia. Amy leads the Women in Cyber program for the Australian Signals Directorate, part of the Australian Intelligence Community. She is an expert in women’s leadership and wellbeing, and her mission is to empower leaders to create a healthy and inclusive cyber security industry. Amy was an Advisor in the Office of Cyber Security at the Departments of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and Home Affairs, and previously managed the Australian Government’s Stay Smart Online cyber security awareness raising campaign. She has 10 years’ experience in cyber and 20 years in the private and public sectors as a small business owner, program manager and policy advisor, with a reputation for exceptional stakeholder engagement. She is an experienced program manager, a certified Organisational Coach and a skilful public speaker and facilitator who’s passionate about lifting others up to become courageous and authentic leaders. She is a leader within the Australian Women in Security Network (AWSN), who coordinated the First Thursday of the Month Club (FTOTM) in Canberra, the founder of Lumen Coaching, and a proud member of the CyberShift Alliance tackling toxic workplace culture. In 2019 she was named “Australia’s Most Outstanding Woman in IT Security” in the Women in Security Awards, and ranked in the Top 20 Cyber Security Professionals category of the IFSEC Global Influencers Security & Fire Awards 2021.

Dr Dan Dongseong Kim, A/Prof Cyber Security, UQ

Dr. Dan Dongseong Kim is an Associate Professor (continuing appointment) in Cyber Security at The University of Queensland (UQ), Brisbane, Australia, prior to UQ. Prior to UQ, he was a faculty member (permanent academic staff; Senior Lecturer 2015-2018, Lecturer 2011-2014) in Cyber Security in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Canterbury (UC), Christchurch, New Zealand from 2011 to 2018. From 2008 to 2011, he was a postdoc at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina in the US. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland in the US in 2007. Dr David Stockdale, Director of AusCERT, Deputy Director, ITS, UQ

David is the Director of AusCERT, one of the oldest CERTs (Computer Emergency Response Teams) in the world and a NPO based at UQ. He is also responsible for IT Infrastructure, Data Services and operational security at UQ. AusCERT is a member based Computer Emergency Response Team that provides Incident Response, Cyber Threat Intelligence and training to many Australian agencies and companies. In an age where cybersecurity is on the agenda from the boardroom to the shopfloor. A firm believer that security is everyone’s business, he advocates for “security is job zero” and is everyone’s responsibility. Exploring new markets, delivering new products and delivering services that the clients truly value are strong drivers for David. David is passionate about the opportunities that public cloud services, such as AWS and Azure, bring to organisations.

Mr Kay Kwak, Head of Talon, CTI Group of S2W

Mr. Kwak is Head of Talon, at the CTI Group of S2W. His main research is on the threat intelligence field. He was previously Adjunct Professor at Sungkyunkwan University. He currently acts as a member of the National Police Agency Cybercrime Advisory Committee. He is the main author of the threat intelligence report “Campaign Rifle: Andariel, the Maiden of Anguish”, published in 2017. In this report, he firstly attributed the threat actor "Andariel", a state-sponsored APT group, which was not discovered in the past. He has spoken at various international conferences such as BlackHat Europe, BlackHat Asia, Kaspersky SAS, HITCON, PACSEC, and more.

YK Lee, Sr Director, AI Spera

Ms. YK Lee is Sr Director of AI Spera. Her role is to identify and close strategic up-selling opportunities by understanding core client business needs, manage and development new investment opportunities and relations, support the evolution, integration, and implementation of strategies systems/processes to meet the rapid growth of the business and targets attainment, and she works closely with product, marketing and revenue teams to constantly optimize efforts relating to company-wide goals.

Session 4 Cyber Security Interdisciplinary Education

MC: A/Prof John Williams, Deputy Director, UQ Cyber Security

John is Deputy Director of UQ Cyber, at the Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the University of Queensland. His research interests include reconfigurable computing and real-time embedded Systems, as well as 3D computer vision and imaging. He has authored 5 refereed journal publications, and more than 20 refereed conference publications, and recently edited the Proceedings of the 2004 IEEE International Conference on Field Programmable Technology. He has been a member of the IEEE for 8 years.

Dr Hun-Yeong Kwon, Professor at the School of Cyber Security, Korea University

Dr Kwon is a Professor (PHD in Law) at the School of Cyber Security at the Korea University. Prof. Kwon has developed the current cyber security curriculum of my graduate school. He has a unique educational background (Phd. in Law. ) in the cyber security area. He has been deeply involved in the development of e-commerce, e-government, cybersecurity related laws in South Korea for many years. Dr Kwon will share a unique experiment while he was developing a cybersecurity curriculum from the perspective as a policy maker, Phd in law, and a cybersecurity expert. Some beliefs he has are ‘Cybersecurity field demands convergence talent with a social and technological understanding’, ‘Current education system is designed on the premise of the industrial society’, ‘New educational design ought to be based on social communication and technological ability’, ‘Every course should be designed based on harmony and balance that can induce the interest of trainees’ and ‘Periodic curriculum evaluation, verification, modification, and improvement should be continuously carried out.’
